About the Artist: MJ Jee
I’m a painter, born in South Korea, who now resides in Manhattan with my husband. My travel to Tuscany, Italy, left an indelible impression on me. I yearned to preserve those vivid memories beyond mere photographs. This desire ignited my passion for painting.
Through my work, I hope to evoke emotion, inspire wonder, and bring a sense of peace to those who view it.
Living adjacent to Central Park, I am profoundly grateful for the daily opportunity to observe its gifts of nature. When entering the park, I tremble at the thrilling sight of its magnificent towering trees beneath an expansive blue sky. Filtered through the everchanging clouds and light the simple and innate black beauty of the trees' forms captivates me.
This proximity has inspired my current "Central Park Trees" series. I depict these deciduous wonders as enduring sentinels and capture their essence through the changing seasons. Focusing on the trunks and branches, stripped of their colorful leaves, I seek to reveal the tree's authentic form - its core identity that remains steadfast regardless of seasonal transformations. This approach reflects my aspiration to perceive the world in its unembellished truth, embracing simplicity and clarity. To achieve the black that I want in my paintings, I use Sumi ink with a wash for different levels of intensity.
In my “Dancing Colors” series, I strive to artistically express the melodies inherent in our diverse lives. The multiple hues and varying sizes of the circles symbolize a spectrum of emotions and the richness of human experience. Warm tones convey joy and passion, while cooler shades reflect solitude and introspection. Each circle represents an individual, highlighting our unique identities and the necessity for mutual respect. Collectively these circles illustrate our shared existence within the vast cosmos. We cohabit this planet as an interwoven community.
The colors I select narrate the passage of time and the cyclical nature of seasons: soft greens and pinks evoke the onset of spring, vibrant reds and greens signify the fullness of summer, earthy browns suggest the transition into autumn and cool blues and whites capture the stillness of winter. The continuous flow of these circles mirrors the constant march of time. Their distinct colors and sizes symbolize the continuum of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

한국에서 태어나 현재는 뉴욕 맨해튼 센트럴 파크 인근에 거주하며 회화 작업을 이어가고 있습니다. 이탈리아 토스카니에서 마주한 풍경은 제게 강한 울림을 주었고, 그 기억을 사진이 아닌 그림으로 남기고 샆다는 열망이 제 작업의 출발점이 되었습니다.
자연은 제 예술의 중심에 있습니다. 센트럴 파크의 사계절은 매일 다른 표정으로 제게 말을 걸어옵니다.
그 중에서도 잎을 떨군 나무의 줄기와 가지는 꾸밈없는 진실한 아름다움을 드러냅니다. 이 감동은 현재 작업중인 "Central Park Trees" 시리즈로 이어졌습니다. 저는 나무의 형태를 통해 본질과 시간의 흐름을 담아내고자 하며, 이를 위해 다양한 농담의 수묵(Sumi ink)을 사용합니다. 빛을 머금은 먹의 깊은 블랙은 저에게 모든 색을 품은 하나의 중심색입니다.
또 다른 연작 "Dancing Colors" 에서는 원형, 선, 색을 통해 사람들의 감정과 관계, 그리고 우리가 함께 살아가는 세계를 표현합니다. 각각의 원과 선은 한 사람을 상징하며, 따뜻한 색은 기쁨과 에너지, 차가운 색은 고요함과 사색을 나타냅니다. 시간의 흐름과 계절의 리듬을 색으로 시각화하며, 다양한 존재들이 어우러진 조화를 시각화하고 있습니다.
그림이 감정을 일깨우고, 사유의 순간을 전하며, 평온을 건넬 수 있기를 바랍니다.
